| Our thoughts on the Budget |

Sandra Kirby, Chief Executive of Arthritis New Zealand is cautiously optimistic with the Budget announced today: “It’s good to hear that health is one of the winners with nearly half of the Government spending over the next four years going into these services, although it does raise a few questions.” “Our question to the Government is that will any of the $130 million set aside for more disability support services go to providing the services and the support for those with disabilities wanting return to the workforce?” “25,000 New Zealanders will not work this year due to arthritis. That equated to $1.48 billion in lost productivity in 2010. If the Government wants to save money, then help these people return to work.” “Minister Bennett promotes people aspiring to return to work and evidence shows the benefits to them and their communities. The Government needs to direct the disability funding to early intervention and adequate treatment.” “Support services like those that Arthritis New Zealand offers are vital in getting more New Zealanders back to work after being diagnosed with a chronic illness such as arthritis.” |
